Weekly Photo Challenge: Change

It all began with a Halloween costume I wore in 2011. See I work in a health club and a lot of the members I interact with are retired. So I thought it would be fun to dress up in my poodle skirt and my dad’s 1953 letter sweater. I thought it would be a blast from the past for some and a way to connect. The outfit was a success for many members truly seemed to enjoy the opportunity to share with me their stories “back in the day.”

That evening, I was telling my friend William, who I have written about here, about my costume, about the day and about the stories, and that’s when he said something to me that was life changing. Continue reading

Charlotte’s Incommunicado

The western world, my dear McGee, is being turned into one vast cruise ship, and there is a shortage of cruise directors.”

Meyer from a Deadly Shade of Gold by John D. MacDonald

Sometimes it just does my soul good to put aside my cellphone, shut down the computer and just enjoy the world around me. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last three days and I have enjoyed it so much I’m going to keep doing it for a few more.

But before I go again, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs, for as Jimmy so often does, he just has this way of capturing my mood in a song.

May you all have a great start to your week! :-)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Lost In The Details

Harry Potter Surprise Party

Yesterday our house was the setting for a surprise 18th birthday party hosted by my daughter Meg and her friend. The girls did all the planning, preparation and decorating, all Neal and I had to do was take our barking prone dog Blackberry and leave for the afternoon.

When the party was over and it was safe to bring Blackberry back, we found our house had been transformed into something straight out of Harry Potter’s magical world.

As I walked from room to room, I found delights in each theme soaked space and I was completely blown away by the thought and care these two young ladies put forth on behalf of their friend.

I found myself so pleasantly lost in the details of my absolutely wonderful daughter’s efforts.

Get lost in more Details here.

An Officer and a Gentleman

My flying friend framed

One helluva great guy has Gone West today. To think I got to sit beside and listen to someone who visited the Spirit of St. Louis at Roosevelt Field before Lindbergh’s famous flight, who flew B-17s in WW2, who was present at the Nuremberg Trials. Because of my friend I not only got to touch history, but I got to know what it is to have my heart forever touched by a truly splendid gentleman.

Blue Skies, my friend.

How Education Can Work

Swinging Meg polaroid

The “Send” button has been pushed on Meg’s last college application. It’s over. She’s done all she can do and now it’s up to the admission’s gods to decide her freshman year fate.

What a relief to have this part of the process over. Soon I hope to write more about the admissions process. I am sorry to say, but it’s a dreadful process. What should be an exciting time in my daughter’s life isn’t. It was a long autumn in our house, filled with many moments of tears and upset. I just don’t remember it being this way when I was a senior in high school. But that was 30 years ago. Apparently Meg’s reaction to this nasty process was quite like that of many of her classmates, at least I get that impression from the other parents and kids to whom I speak.

Meg wants to write a book about it. I think she should. But that’s for another day. Today I want to share with you the very last of the 20 essays she wrote for the applications. The experience she writes about in this essay is such a wonderful contrast to the post I wrote here about what’s wrong with our educational system. Continue reading
