Weekly Photo Challenge: Everyday Life

On a recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, as I watched a container ship leaving port late one evening and heading into the darkness of the open sea, I thought about the crews on board these ships and how they are the unseen and unsung heroes of everyday life. They are gone for months at a time, transporting around the world all the stuff we need and want. Economies are predicated on the production, distribution and purchasing of stuff and without the men and women who keep these ships in motion, around the world and around the clock, so much of the beloved stuff we take for granted would not be nearly as available, or nearly as affordable, as we take for granted. These people keep our global economy moving, literally.

    • Thanks for the link! Thank goodness for the “translate” button! The trips are awesome and I am completely taken by the idea. I am working on my husband and he is growing warmer to the idea. That’s good, because when I get my mind set on something…. :-)

  2. I have a friend who is in the middle of a transatlantic, travelling as ‘freight’ – a happy 65th birthday present to herself. Cool post and deep thoughts – love the perspectives I’m reading about and looking at through this topic.

    • I truly enjoy the Weekly Photo Challenge for the same reason you mentioned, so many perspectives from around the world, it’s really fascinating. I would love to know what your friend thinks of her experience as I am absolutely taken by the idea of such travel! As always, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! :-)

  7. Lovely, lovely post! I have longed to travel by rail hobo-style all my life. Traveling with cargo combines solitude with beauty. I would never sit in first class if I could jostle with luggage and goods. The magnificence of our global industry could be felt on a personal level traveling with big metal boxes. Hurrah!

    • Lori, as always, so wonderfully put. I just can’t imagine cruising any other way. I don’t want to be surrounded on a ship by all the stuff I deliberately left behind on shore. No, I want peace and quiet, a book and the water. Someday I will…

p.s. I finished the post. I will publish it in the morning. :-)

  8. I don’t know why but the picture doesn’t seem real. Just like painting or Photoshop. Because of the angle maybe? But it is a nice picture indeed. Beautiful. Love the ship and the cargo.

My everyday post is about batik, Indonesian traditional clothing. Hope you can visit and read it sometime.

    • I assure you the image is completely un-photoshopped. Just me with my Nikon taking photos out the hotel window. :-) I stopped by your site and enjoyed your lesson about batik and the impact on the local craftsmen. I hope October 2 goes well. Your mission is a good one.
