The natural function of the wing is to soar upwards and carry that which is heavy up to the place where dwells the race of gods. More than any other thing that pertains to the body it partakes of the nature of the divine. Plato from Phaedrus
Occasionally, while going about life you see something extraordinary, something that makes you take pause and reflect. That happened to me when I looked out of the cockpit and saw the shadow of my airplane in a cloud and encircled in a rainbow. In the hundreds of hours I have spent flying airplanes this is the first time I have seen what pilots refer to as “glory”. This image expresses the freedom I feel being a pilot.

it’s like you caught the plane’s aura on film!
Absolutely!
That is just beautiful!

truly an unique capture…
Thanks. It was, like a visual gift with some spiritual significance tucked inside.
Very cool – I saw this phenomenon too, before landing at JFK almost a year ago. I was glued to the window. And just recently, I fell asleep on a cross country flight at night & woke up to look out onto the northern lights weaving below the big dipper – glued to the window again, with a very cold nose. It could be sheer luck, but it does require that one looks, and appreciates on a level deeper than the every day. I enjoy your blog.
Thank you. As much as I love being the one who is flying the airplane I enjoy too being the passenger. When I am flying I am occupied with the fundamentals, what is literally right in front of me, and is a thrill because it is engaging and challenging, but when I am in the right seat I can relax and appreciate the other side of flying, the deeper level as you mention. I understand that ‘nose pressed to the glass’ delight and to see the northern lights, well that is definitely worth the price of the ticket!
